Born Free Foundation estimates nearly 12 percent of the world’s almost 10,000 bird species are in danger of extinction.
Birds play a significant role in the functioning of the world’s ecosystems, in a way that directly impacts human health, the economy and food production – as well as millions of other species.
Birds maintain the delicate balance between plant and herbivore, predator and prey and play a key role in cycling nutrients and helping to fertilise marine ecosystems such as coral reefs. They pollinate plants and control pests, which allows our gardens to thrive. They disperse seeds through travel and even bring back plants to ecosystems that were destroyed.
Human actions such as rapid urbanisation and deforestation are threatening bird species worldwide. It is up to us to ensure the survival and protection of the world’s birds before all we see are birds in the digital form. It is up to us to make better informed decisions every day.
